In preparation for a new term (Fall 2022), I recently updated — that is, thoroughly rewrote — my teaching philosophy. This is the first update in more than a decade; I wrote it when I was a junior faculty at the University of Calgary. Now that I’m starting my 15th year of teaching, my formal articulation of just what I think I’m doing was due for an update.
In short, it’s about curiosity and critical thought. It’s about building skills alongside growing knowledge. It’s about reading books as an act of defiance against distractions, yet using technology as a tool for thought. It’s about all the balances I try to strike as an instructor, the respect I have for students, and the gratitude I have for this profession.
