The D2L Panopticon

In my Elizabethan Poetry and Prose course I’m using Desire2Learn as our learning management system. It looks like this:

Screen Shot 2014-03-13 at 07.21.17Not too shabby; you can see the unread discussion posts in the upper right, and if I’d added dates and assignments and content and news, you’d see them, too. It’s a fine dashboard for what’s happening in the course, if you use it right.

But what if you don’t? What if, instead, you have a WordPress blog, a Twitter hashtag, and student-generated Facebook pages and YouTube channels and Tumblr blogs and who knows what else?

Will Desire2Learn let me aggregate them all into one interface? Something like this:

My students’ multiple self-generated venues for creativity are crying out for aggregation. Can D2L do it?

I have tried a large number of tutorials for putting RSS feeds into a D2L widget on the web and none of them seem to work. I’m completely frustrated, and very disappointed — this is pretty basic functionality.
